I had the joy of transforming this early 20th-century townhouse in Sliema—originally designed by Maltese architect Giuseppe Psaila – into a home ready for its next chapter. My clients, a young couple with their first child and planning to grow their family, fell in love with the graceful framework of the house and asked for help to bring warmth, soul, and flow back into its walls.
The house had good energy and beautiful architectural rhythm, but the ground floor layout needed to breathe. Together with their architect, we opened it up while preserving Psaila’s decorative stonework and arches, letting light travel all the way through. From the entry hall, your eye moves naturally toward the garden – past velvet seating, natural wood finishes, and warm brass details that softly catch the light.
A new glazed skylight above the kitchen was added to pull the outside in, filling the space with sun and sky. It’s now a space where the family can gather every day – moss green cabinetry, walnut accents, and a peninsula layout that’s as good for pancakes and crayons as it is for wine and friends.
In the living room, we leaned into texture and tone: rust velvet seating, a soft inset fireplace, and a palette that feels inviting but grounded. It’s a grown-up space that doesn’t mind being a little lived-in – where toys and candles sit happily side by side.
Upstairs, the primary bedroom is calm and cocooned. We wrapped the walls in soft neutrals and added a touch of olive for depth. Just off it, the bathroom strikes that elusive balance between classic and relaxed – bottle green glazed tiles, brass fixtures, and honed stone that feels like it belongs.
We also carved out a study for working late or winding down. Ink-blue cabinetry, warm panelled walls, and a velvet sofa that feels like it’s been there forever – it’s a quiet kind of confidence.
This house has layers – of history, texture, and story. We didn’t want to erase any of that. We just helped bring it into the now. It’s a space where past and present live side by side, and where this growing family can keep building a life with intention.
