Valletta Studio Apartments

Modern Layers in a Historic Shell

Warm. Compact. Clever. Timeless.

My client approached me to transform an old kerrejja block within Valletta’s UNESCO-listed grid into a calm, contemporary short-let experience – quietly celebrating the soul of its storied past while layering in thoughtful comfort. The brief? To create a series of studio apartments that feel relaxed, considered, and a little bit poetic.

Each unit was reimagined with a smarter plan, using privacy curtains to separate sleep and social zones and a considered kitchenette layout that feels cohesive but not cramped. We gave guests the comfort of a proper sofa, added wall lights for that hotel feel, and introduced smart built-in storage to make each space intuitive and inviting.

The design blends warm, earthy tones with old-world character—think oak-look floors, handpicked upholstery, and modern updates that don’t feel at odds with history. Painted traditional doors in olive and coral nod to the colourful streetscapes outside, while sculptural lights and simple art prints add personality without cluttering the space.

Each apartment has its own palette – some softer and sun-washed, others moodier with deeper greens and mustard accents – but all unified by a relaxed Mediterranean charm. You’ll find unexpected details throughout: upholstered headboards tucked into custom cabinetry, round timber dining tables paired with modern classics, and lighting designed to glow, not glare.

This project wasn’t just about surface upgrades. It was about honouring the scale and intimacy of these modest spaces, crafting homes-from-home where visitors could feel both grounded and elevated, right in the heart of the city.
