I was approached by a young couple who had recently purchased their first home together—a traditional Maltese townhouse in the heart of Msida. With a love for timeless elegance and a keen eye for design, they sought a space that effortlessly blended the classic charm of the townhouse with modern sophistication.

My vision was to create a calm, inviting atmosphere, using a palette of soft neutrals and natural wood accents to infuse warmth and texture into the home. The townhouse greets you with a beautifully sculpted arch in the hallway, complemented by traditional Maltese tiles. While some of the original tiles could be salvaged and incorporated into the design, others had succumbed to humidity. This led to the decision to use a natural stone tile in the open-plan space, carefully chosen to mimic the appearance of limestone flagstone, providing a timeless feel that resonates with the home’s heritage.

The arch theme was embraced and thoughtfully mirrored throughout the design. A square arch within the open-plan space subtly conceals the transition between the original structure and the modern extension. The curves of the arch are echoed in the choice of pendant lighting above the dining table, while a curved-edged corner fireplace creates a cosy focal point in the living room. Balanced by an open library, this yin-yang dynamic brings harmony to the space.

The kitchen features a refined balance of rich blue, walnut tones, and brass accents, while the bathroom and study embrace natural greens and wood, enhancing the organic feel. Every carefully considered detail works together to create a home that is both grounded and fluid—a beautiful blend of tradition and modernity.
